Using Google Alerts to Track Stuff

When I first discovered Google Alerts I used it to find out what was being written about me, or at least anyone with my name in. It’s amusing perhaps, but not always useful.

However, nowadays I do keep Track of a few topics and keywords this way, and it does bring up some useful information from time to time and help me with my research into certain topics.

Easy to set up:

  • goto: http://www.google.com/alerts
  • Enter the search string in the first box
  • Choose the type of alert you want. News, Blog, Web, Groups, Video, or Comprehensive. (Comprehensive covers all the options).\
  • Choose the frequency you wish to receive alerts – As it happens, once a day, once a week.
  • Choose either an email to which you want it delivered, or to a feed that you can read in your favorite RSS reader.
  • Click create alert button.

That’s it!
