Google Gives Up

At least on some services. Most folks will have read by now that Google is closing some services down, including Dodgeball and Google Notebook.

I’m quite miffed about the Google Notebook announcement, because I use the darn thing. Google state that they won’t be closing down existing accounts, but they will not allow any new ones.

My Blackberry Curve

Firstly, that tells me that the writing is on the wall, and it’s really the first warning to move away from Google Notebook. Secondly, although they’re not shutting down my account, they’re going to remove the ability to use the Firefox extension.  Well Google, that’s one of the main reasons I use your Notebook in the first place, as it’s just so handy to pull up from my Firefox Status Bar.

On a brighter note (excuse the pun) Evernote have announced that they are developing a Google Notebook importer.

I was already considering moving the data I have in Google Notebook over there in any case; an importer will make that job easier.

Three things I’d like to see now!

1. A Firefox Extension similar to the notebook one, where I could have it open a specific Evernote notebook. That way I could use Evernote in the same way as I do Google Notebook.

2. The ability to selectively share Evernote notebooks. At the present time, I can either keep a notebook to myself or share it with everyone. I want to be able to share a notebook with my wife; another notebook with a client; one with some friends online; another with a team of coders for collaborating, and so on.

3. An Evernote app for the Blackberry!

Still, I’m already a great fan of Evernote, and as it develops I hope it can and will replace the surely soon to be defunct Google Notebook.

  • The import is on the way! I talked with Evernote about it last night. They are burning the midnight oil to get it done. That's why we decided to tie our Project Management application into Evernote!

  • That is indeed good news!
  • Well, Google is closing Google Notebook, but they are starting a similar service where Google users can create their websites on Google - please check sites.google.com for details.
